Child Painting Party Theme Ideas

Any activity you're enjoying, your kids will, too; have fun with it.

Most children love to paint and it's a great way to let them express themselves and have fun with friends and family at the same time. It's not hard to turn it into a party, and that means a lot of opportunities for socializing, sharing and meeting new people. Whether you're inviting the neighbor children or your child's school friends, you can create an environment that's fun for all with just a little preparation. Adding a theme to the party lets the kids dress up or stretch their imaginations while playing together.

Pirates

If your child loves pirates, a painting party in which the kids decorate a treasure chest before an adult hides it and then sends them on a treasure hunt to find it can be a lot of fun. A treasure chest can be a simple but sturdy cardboard box with a lid or a blank toy chest with lots of room for the kids to paint and express themselves. They can paint a lock onto the chest and decorate with scenes of pirates hunting for the treasure, as well as maps and images of what they hope to find in it. Then, while the chest dries and an adult loads it with treasure and hides it, the kids can have a meal and perhaps watch a pirate movie to get them in the mood for the coming treasure hunt. If you plan to giving out goody bags to the children, this is a great way to do it. Stash the goody bags in the chest and leave clues as to where it's hidden, then let them at it.

Superheroes

Most children have a favorite superhero or two. Take a trip to a local copy shop and have coloring pages of the children's favorite superheroes blown up. This way more than one child can work on each painting, and you'll have more than a single hero for the kids to choose from. Encourage your guests to come as their favorite heroes as well, and they'll love getting to play dress up and save the world. For added fun, dilute some paint with enough water to make it splash, but not enough to take away its color, and fill balloons with the diluted paint. Make sure you use nontoxic, washable varieties and let the kids change into old clothes their parents won't mind them getting wet and dirty in, then let the little superheroes engage in a friendly water balloon fight or throw the balloons at a large piece of paper or cardboard mounted on an outdoor wall or fence to create a group masterpiece.

Dinosaurs

Blow up coloring book pictures of dinosaurs at your local copy shop and the kids can paint them, each getting to choose a favorite "terrible lizard." Children can also paint paper mache or foam dinosaur eggs. For an added fun activity after the eggs have dried and food has been eaten, send the kids on a dinosaur egg hunt and see who can bring back the most eggs.
