Paint Over Painted Furniture
A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for old furniture. Give already-painted furnishings a facelift or even a whole new look, just by adding a new coat of paint.
Instructions
1. Put on your respirator mask and latex gloves before starting your project. These safety items protect your face, lungs and skin from becoming irritated by sanding dust and paint fumes.
2. Sand the entire surface with 100-grit sandpaper to reduce rough spots, level out gouges and remove peeling paint. Finish your sanding process by going over the furniture with 220-grit finishing sandpaper. When sanding is complete, you should have a smooth, uniform painting surface.
3. Wipe down the furniture's surface with a clean, dry cloth, and vacuum up sawdust residue. The residual dust can get stuck in your primer and paint coat, if you do not clean it up properly.
4. Brush on 1 to 2 coats of KILZ Original Low V.O.C. primer, depending on how dark the underlying paint color is. KILZ Low V.O.C. contains less chemical odor than other primers, and is designed to block out previous paint and seal existing water, smoke or fire stains. Allow the KILZ to dry 24 hours before proceeding to the next step.
5. Apply a coat of interior latex paint to the furniture, and allow it to dry for 2 hours.
6. Apply a second coat of interior latex paint, allowing it to dry for at least 2 hours as well. If you're painting over a dark color, you may need a third coat of paint to ensure that your furniture has thorough, even, paint coverage.
7. Allow the furniture to dry completely (24 hours or more) before finishing your piece with stencils, appliques or faux painting techniques, or before moving it into your room for daily use.
