Saltbox homes often feature wood siding.
Saltbox houses, typically built in New England and made of wood siding and roofs, became popular in America in the 1600s. Popular colors for saltbox houses exteriors include white, green, blue and yellow. Popular colors for interiors include pale pink, pastel blue and pale yellow. Some saltbox houses lack paint completely, instead appearing the natural brown color of their wood siding. Since the houses typically do not have any special sealant, you can paint them with minimal preparation.

Exterior
1. Lightly sand the exterior of the house with a medium-grit sandpaper. Work from top to bottom using left-to-right motions. Wipe the sawdust off the house with a clean cloth.
2. Paint the wooden siding of your saltbox house with a water-based paint primer. Dip a paint roller in the primer and apply it to the siding, working from top to bottom. If necessary, stand on a ladder to reach higher portions of the house. Allow the primer to dry for three to four hours.
3. Paint the wood siding. Most saltbox homes are painted a natural brown or white, or a bold color such as dark red, sage green or light yellow. Dip a paintbrush into your desired color of water-based paint and brush it onto the house exterior, working from top to bottom.
4. Allow the first layer to dry for about three hours, then add a second layer.
5. Seal the paint with a water-based spray sealant. Hold the can about 9 inches from the surface of the wood and spray over the entire surface of the house, working from top to bottom.

7. Prime the walls of one room. Dip a roller brush into paint primer, and apply the primer to the wall, working from top to bottom. Allow the primer to dry for about three hours.
8. Paint the walls a pastel color such as pale blue or yellow. Dip a paint roller in the appropriate color of paint and apply it to the wall, working from top to bottom. Allow the paint to dry for three to four hours, then apply a second layer of paint.
9. Paint the remaining rooms of your house using the same techniques.
