Quickest Drying out Interior Oilbased Offers

Painting walls with oil-based paints adds rich, vibrant color to your home.

The main difference between oil-based and acrylic paints is that oil-based paints take longer to dry than acrylic paints, which are water-based. Oil paints use linseed oil to bond colors together and must oxidize and polymerize to dry, which can take eight hours or more; acrylic or latex paints dry through evaporation, which takes one to four hours. However, oil paints can also sustain a higher pigment load, making them more vibrant and colorful than acrylic paint. Using thinner coats will also help an oil-based interior paint job dry quicker.

Behr

A manufacturer of all types of interior and exterior paints, Behr is carried at hardware and home improvement stores nationwide. Behr produces an oil-based interior/exterior semi-gloss enamel paint that provides a professional-quality, fast-drying interior painting option. The paint is mildew resistant, and stains can easily be removed from painted surfaces after they have dried completely. The paint is appropriate for use on wood, drywall, plaster, masonry, metal, wallpaper, stucco, aluminum and cinder block surfaces. The paint should not be thinned, should be applied in thin coats and should be stirred often during use. The paint dries to the touch in four to five hours, and a second coat can be applied 24 hours later.

Sherwin Williams

Sherwin Williams provides a full line of acrylic and oil-based paints for interior and exterior use. Its Classic 99 interior/exterior semi-gloss oil paint can be applied to primed plaster, wood, wallboard, masonry and primed metal. It comes in many colors and covers 350 to 400 square feet per gallon. It dries to the touch in two to four hours, and a second coat can be applied 24 hours later.

Benjamin Moore

Benjamin Moore produces many lines of interior and exterior paints and stains. Its Alkyd Dulamel C207 interior oil paint is a high-quality semi-gloss enamel paint that covers a range of surfaces. It can be applied to previously painted plaster, masonry, drywall, plywood, wood, metal, doors, sash and cabinet surfaces. It is particularly appropriate for kitchens and baths because it is resistant to moisture and steam. It also cleans well and does not produce an unpleasant odor during painting. A pdf link, "TDS C207," on Benjamin Moore's website says dry time to the touch is four to six hours. A second coat can be applied after 16 hours.
