Decorating a multipurpose room can be challenging.
Decorating a multipurpose space is often difficult. Each room should be clearly defined and visually pleasing. Otherwise, your home will appear cluttered and not unified. Decorating a small living room and dining room combination as two separate rooms but with shared design, colors, fabrics and paint is ideal. Before you begin decorating, assess the area and how you can incorporate elements into both areas.

1. Paint the walls all one color. Decide on a color that will work well for your combination living and dining rooms. Since the area is small, choose a neutral or soft color. One option is a light buttery yellow or a soft sage green.
2. Add rugs to the room. Arrange them so that they define the room as two separate spaces. Visually, it will look that way. Also, place one under the dining room table and another under the coffee table. They don't need to be the same pattern, but they should have a similar pattern.
3. Use the same fabrics in the dining room half as you do in the living room half. This fabric can be used in the dining area in napkins or as a table cloth. Use it for throw pillows or slip covers as well. The fabric to use depends on your wall color. Keep it relatively neutral with touches of other colors, such as orange or blue.

4. Add a pendant light to the dining area. Hang it above the dining room table. This will make it appear visually separate from the living room. Install a dimmer switch so you can adjust the lighting as necessary.
5. Arrange living room furniture around the coffee table to create a defined space. This also creates a conversation area for entertaining. Add side tables with lamps next to the couch and love seat. Extensive lighting should surround this space.
