Fresh paint After Getting rid of Wallpaper

Paint Can

Painting a room with a fresh new color is the quickest and most affordable way to update the look of your home. But what if your walls are currently covered in wallpaper? Relax, it's easy to remove the paper and prepare your walls for painting, even if that wallpaper has been up there for many years. The entire project can be done over the weekend, and requires only basic tool and a bit of patience.

Instructions

1. Prepare your room for wallpaper removal. Move all furniture away from the walls and cover it with drop cloths or plastics, then use a screwdriver to remove all electrical outlet plates and light switch covers.

2. Remove the wallpaper. Use a spray bottle to cover the walls with a mixture of water and vinegar, then start at a seam and peel away the paper. You will need to use a wallpaper scraper or a large putty knife to remover tougher sections.

3. Wash away any excess glue left on the wall using a bit of dish washing detergent and a rag. You may need to use your scraper or putty knife again to help with this.

4. Fill any holes or damaged areas in the wall with a bit of joint compound. Apply the compound with your putty knife, making sure you leave the patched area level with the rest of the wall.

5. Wait 24 hours to allow the joint compound to dry. Then lightly sand the patched areas until they are smooth and level.

6. Paint your walls using a paint roller and a can of latex paint. When you have finished, allow 4 to 6 hours for the paint to dry before moving the furniture back into place.
